Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to what customers ask us the most.

How much does excavation work cost?

Small residential jobs like yard grading or digging footings typically run $1,500–$5,000, trenching averages $10–$25 per linear foot, and a full basement excavation usually lands between $12,000 and $25,000. Soil type, machine access and haul distance move the price more than square footage. You get an exact written quote after a free site walk — before any dirt moves.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Acme Excavation LLC is a licensed contractor and carries general liability insurance and workers' compensation on every crew. We're happy to send certificates of insurance before work begins — any excavator who hesitates on that is a red flag.

Do I need a permit for grading, excavation or demolition?

Often, yes — most US cities require permits for demolition, major grading and any work in a public right-of-way, while short trenches and minor leveling usually don't. Rules vary by city and county. We check the requirements for your address and pull the permits ourselves as part of the job.

How do you avoid hitting gas, water or power lines?

We call 811 before every single job so public utilities are located and marked at no charge, and we hand-dig within 24 inches of any locate mark. For lines 811 won't find — septic, sprinklers, propane, landscape lighting — we bring in a private locating service when needed. It's the one step we never skip.

How soon can you start, and how long does a job take?

Most residential jobs get on the schedule within one to two weeks, and urgent digs can often start within days. Once on site, a utility trench or single footing is usually done in a day, grading takes one to three days, and a basement excavation runs two to five days depending on soil and haul-off.

Will heavy equipment tear up my driveway or lawn?

We plan the machine path before we arrive and protect driveways, sidewalks and septic areas with mats or plywood where needed. Some ground disturbance along the route is normal with tracked equipment, but we regrade and clean up the path as part of every job.

What happens if you hit rock, groundwater or buried debris?

Underground surprises do happen, and we handle them with a written change order at unit prices agreed before work starts — never a mystery bill at the end. If the site walk suggests rock or a high water table, we tell you up front so you can budget for it.

Do you handle emergencies like washouts or collapsed trenches?

Yes — storm washouts, erosion cutting toward a foundation, and open or failing trenches are call-today situations. We offer same-day emergency call-outs starting at $450, and you get the full price before the machine comes off the trailer.
